Day 2, Saturday May 29th Flowers & Tea

In the morning we headed out on the ferry to Vancouver Island.
It is a gorgeous but chilly day-even for Erik-on the ferry ride over.
First stop is the famous Butchart (pronounced butch-art) Gardens.
The gardens were originally a quarry owned by Robert Butchart. In 1906, when the quarry was exhausted, Jennie Butchart gradually turned it into beautiful gardens. The gardens are still owned and managed by the Butchart family.
There are 55 acres of the most incredible flowers I have ever seen,
as well as trees, statues,
exotic,
over looks,
one of the many fountains,
tulips!,
poppies,
colors,
window boxes,
perfection,
colorful trees,
flowers dripping everywhere,
tulip lined streets,
I love this picture...
Erica loves any kind of horse,
I think he'd blend better in the fruit section,
this road was lined with these gorgeous red trees,
as well as these amazing flowers,
I've run out of adjectives,
I would definitely have season passes if I lived near the gardens. Afterwards we headed to Victoria. Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia, Canada. On a clear day it is possible to see the Olympic Mountains in Washington State. It was just a trading post and fort until 1958. With the discovery of gold it grew to a port of 5000 within a few days. The gold rush is going to be a real theme in our trip.
After lunch of fish and chips the first stop for me was Murchies-awesome place to buy real tea.
The famous Empress Hotel was built in 1908. Beautiful hanging baskets of flowers are on every lamp post.
The British Columbia Parliament building. Our tour guide then took us on a sight seeing tour around the southern area of Vancouver Island-including, to the delight of the kids, thousands of rabbits that live on the University of Victoria campus. The boys enjoying the ferry ride back to our hotel-the Fairmont at the Vancouver air port. There were all sorts of interesting people on the ferry. One was a college rugby team that caused some trouble on the ride back. We were stuck sitting on our bus for quite some time before the they would allow anyone to unload.

Those gardens look amazing. That pink flower at the end looks like a peony...I love their smell. I wish we had known about this place. We stayed downtown at the Hyatt when we visited oh so many years ago. I'm so happy you're posting so many pics!!
