Types of Salmon

Here is an excellent way to remember the 5 different types of salmon.
Chum-Alaskans feed it to their sled dogs. It is usually dried out and carried on the sleds in the winter.
Sockeyes-number one salmon for smoking
King-largest at 20-40 lbs. are valued for food and sport fishing. These are first to spawn, also called chinook, and Alaska's state fish.
Silver-also called Coho are great for grilling and poaching, last to spawn and most acrobatic of the salmon
Pinks-used for canned salmon, the smallest at 3-4 lbs.
