Types and similitudes that fortell usually more important later events are commonly used in the old Testament. Typologies are especially important in the book of Isaiah, where the lord uses them to tell us of important events to come. "I have have spoken by the prophets, I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes by the ministry of prophets" Hosea 12:10. Not only does God use typology but He actively designs divine patterns. "That which has been is what will be, that which is done is what will be done and there is nothing new under the sun." Ecclesiastes 1:9 and repeated 1:10, 3:15.
The old Testament is the Word come to life in Jesus. Jesus says, "search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life, these are they which testify of Me." John 5:39. He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me." Luke 24:44. Paul explained that all the laws given to them will not bring salvation but instead they are only a shadow-a typology of of what will really bring salvation-Jesus. Colossians 2:16-17. Paul explains it again in Hebrews 10:1-11. Some typologies are Messianic, some reveal God's plan for salvation, and some fortell what has and is to happen to Israel. All of the Israelites' history is filled with types.
