Erica made up a Good Person Club.
Saturday we headed out to kayak,
First we headed out to Makapu'u (Hawaiian for bulging eyes)Beach but it was too rough to kayak. The island to the left is Manan Island State Seabird Sanctuary, also called rabbit island because someone released rabbits there. Apparently the birds and rabbits get along well. The right is Kaohikaipu Island Seabird Sanctuary.
This is a modern site, possibly begun by someone piling up lava rocks. This is not in the Hawaiian historic register or listed as an ancient site of HI. I don't want any island visitors (tourists) to be misled in thinking these are ancient birthing stones or wahi pana.
This is what we looked like driving around-kind of crazy, it seems like just the tip of the kayaks are in the truck-luckily Erik is pretty good at tying things down. Na Mokulua is in the background.
Makapuu Lighthouse,
Makai Pier, I just love the mountains...
Na Mokulua means "the two islands" in Hawaiian. They are called the Moks. They are about .75 miles off Lanikai. The larger is Moku Nui and the smaller is Moku Iki, both are part of the Hawaiian State Seabird Sanctuary.
Gorgeous Waimanalo Beach,
We headed back to Kaneohe and decided to head to Coconut Island or Moku o Lo'e.
In 1934 Christian Homes, heir to Fleischmann's increased a 12 acre island to 28 acres. He built a house and area for his pets. During WWII the island was used for r&r for navy pilots. In 1947 the island was converted into a resort. Shots for the show Gilligan's Island were filmed here as well. The island now is owned by the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology which is part of UH. On the way out Evan and I saw a beautiful sea turtle.
snails were all over the mangroves,
We saw some really interesting sea cucumbers,
this is the island we went out to with Charlie, Michelle, and Hope-it was a very far 2 miles away,
we are still going around Coconut Island,
at the tip of this mountain is the end of the Stairway to Heaven hike,
still heading around Coconut Island,
the ferry landing from Oahu to Coconut Island,
heading back to Kaneohe-it got pretty choppy but was a great day.
Sunday Erik took the kids to Shark's Cove to go diving,
I am so proud of Evan, he is a real diver now! Erik took some amazing pictures with his new camera...
this little guy was wiggling around and would stretch out,
that's Evan down there,
Owen got to dive a little bit off Erik's octopus-Owen calls it the turtle,
Sunday evening Erik took the kids for a walk, he was playing with the camera a bit,
hanging out on Martha Stewart's swing in KMart,
Owen showing his game he bought with his birthday money,
Owen wanted a fire,
and strawberry cake-we had such a great weekend.
