4th of July and Laus Deo

The kids had fun shooting off fireworks.

Then we headed to base for the big ones.
This is our 14th year watching the fireworks on base. Rimpac is going on right now so the piers were stacked two deep with ships.

The girls fell asleep on the way home.
This is the Washington Monument, no other building in DC can be taller than the monument. On the top of the cap are the words Laus Deo. These words are 555' & 5.125" high, overlooking the 69 sq miles which make up the District of Columbia, the capital of the US. No one can see the words but they seem so meaningfully placed-over a powerful city and successful nation. Laus Deo is Latin for Praise be to God! Construction of the monument started in 1848 and the cap was in place 25 years later. Walking up the 898 steps and 50 landings on the inside, one can read various prayers and scriptures including Proverbs 10:7, Luke 18:16 "let the little children come to Me, do not forbid them, for such is the kingdom of God", and Proverbs 22:6 "train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." My hometown of Baltimore left this inscription: May Heaven to this Union continue its beneficence, may brotherly affection with union be perpetual, may the free constitution which is the work of our ancestors be sacredly maintained and its administration be stamped with wisdom and virtue. Once at the top of the monument it is possible to look out the windows and see how the mall forms a cross with the Whitehouse to the north, the Jefferson Memorial to the south, the Capitol to the east and the Lincoln Memorial to the west. When the cornerstone of the Washington Monument was laid on July 4th, 1848, almost 100 government documents, letters, coins, map, logs, diaries...all having to do with the government in some way were placed inside...along side of the Holy Bible. Happy Birthday America! Laus Deo!
